Hi everyone, this is Dr. Gobind Rai Garg. You all know me by the name of Dr. Goga. And this is Dr. Sparsh Gupta.
I hope you know me well enough. And we are going to be having a discussion about a very important topic which is being faced by the people who have just entered the second year of their medical schools. Dr. Goga, a lot of students have met like this and you assume that I am a second-year student.
But now we have come to the second year. And all the seniors that I meet, every senior of mine who is in the final year, every senior of mine who is an intern, every senior of mine who is doing PG, he tells me again and again that the subjects of the second year, especially PATH, especially PHARMA and some other Micro, don’t ignore them, study them carefully. So, Sir, I am under a lot of pressure.
I am getting a lot of FOMO that I took out the first year like this. Still, people say that it will be compensated when I come in the final year. But people push me a lot for the second year.
Secondly, I have a doubt, Sir, that from some numbers, my favourite college is left. So, I don’t want to make that mistake again, that I should do it in the subsequent entrance exam. So, I want you to guide me in such a way that I study in my favourite branch, in my favourite college in a satisfactory way.
So, please give some advice for this, Sir. See, Dr. Sparsh, there are a lot of students who have this doubt in their mind. Because mostly the first year of a student goes like this.
It is not their fault either. Because there is a new euphoria. Yes, Sir.
So, then you don’t even know where the time comes out. But why do people force the second prof? The reason being that the second prof is the building block, you can say. Because if you don’t know PATHO and PHARMA properly, then you won’t understand medicine in the future.
You won’t understand surgery either. You will also need some Anatomy in Surgery. But you won’t understand Medicine at all.
Similarly, you won’t understand Ophthalmology, Psychiatry. These two subjects will apply to everyone. Pathology will come in everyone.
Because if you don’t want to study Pathology or diseases, then you must study. So, if your base is not strong, then everything will become weak in the future. If the base is not good, then obviously the building will become weak.
So, in the second year, you have to focus the most. You have to pay the most attention. So that you can become a good doctor.
Your concepts should be clear. And when your concepts are clear, then your entrance exam is cleared. Sir, the problem is that it has been a few days since I have come in the second year.
When I asked my seniors, they guided me that textbooks should be read ideally. And now I want to study like an ideal child. So, I bought books, sir.
But now, what should I say? By the grace of God, as soon as I opened those books, whether I talk about any subject, whether I talk about general Micro, whether I talk about General Path, whether I talk about General Pharma. Sir, I start feeling sleepy as soon as I open the book. So, I am afraid that how will I be able to read it.
Secondly, I am studying. So, I am trying to develop my sitting. But I feel that I am not remembering anything.
I am not understanding anything. So, do you understand what I asked you first? That I want to become a good doctor. My seniors are telling me that you have to study.
I am also trying to study. But either the chapter seems very boring to me. Or I am not remembering the information.
So, please solve this problem a little. No, see this is a general problem. Because our medical education system is not as systematic as it should be.
So, there is a solution to this. The most important thing in this is that if you try to read, you can’t read. It seems boring.
So, first of all, you have to stop studying to pass the exam. First of all, you have to think that I have to understand the concept. If you understand the concept, you will understand what is happening in the body, why is it happening and which medicine will work.
So, if you understand this, then the exam will be cleared. Because we ask the same thing in the exam. We start doing it without understanding it.
So, first of all, you have to concentrate on the concept. Rather than passing the exam. So, I totally say that such books that you pick up in the beginning, that you have seen the table, you have seen the diagram, the exam will be passed.
If you start reading it in the beginning, then the exam will be passed. But the problem is that you will have a problem in the entrance and your concept will not develop. So, that’s why seniors recommend that you should read textbooks.
But how should you read the textbook? You have to read the whole textbook once. But it is not possible to remember everything in the textbook. It is not practically possible.
You will not be able to remember. So, the simple solution is that you watch the videos first. So, if you watch the videos, will you benefit from 2-3 things? Number one, you will have clarity.
Someone is sitting in front of you and explaining how something is. You will develop a concept. The second most important thing is that when you read the textbook after the video, then what to concentrate on If you read the whole chapter, but the points that were told in the video, the concepts that were told, the concept will be understood better than the textbook.
And second, you know that you have to remember them more as compared to all the textbooks. So, your base will be that you should know this and understand this. And plus, the extra benefit of videos is that the textbook is not boring.
Plus, you get so many tricks to remember things. And you will get all the side effects from the name of drugs. So, you will get a lot of things from the videos.
So, essentially, to summarise for the people who are not able to understand that in the Hindi language, the first thing is, yes, what sir has said is that second professional subjects are very very crucial. They are required for basically building your fundamentals so that you are able to understand the clinical subjects of Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Pediatrics in a more lucid way, in an easier way subsequently. Second fact which sir is stating is that you have to read the textbooks properly.
And there is a way to go about reading the textbooks. Which is, first, let us say you go through the Cerebellum app, main videos. You have a holistic idea about what is the topic that is going to be covered over there.
After understanding, after having a bird’s eye view of the topic, you go back and read the same topic from the textbook. Now you have an idea about the gross understanding of the topic. Also, you have an idea about which is a more important area which is going to be asked in the subsequent entrance examination.
And with looking at the videos, you also get an idea about the clinical application of this particular subject with your subjects which are present in your final year. Now sir, a second question comes to my mind. Many people say that we are studying.
And you also said that we don’t have to study just to pass. So, you tell me, sir, guide me whether I should practise multiple choice questions right now or should I wait for my final year and then practise it? No, look, you will have to do MCQ right now. The reason being, first of all, you have MCQ exam in your prof. But more importantly, when you read a chapter, your concept is clear.
After that, when you solve MCQ, many more concepts will be clear. In the textbook, the paragraph was written. When solving MCQ, it was understood what it meant and why it was written.
So, if you want to solidify your concept, make it very good, then MCQs will have to be solved side by side. There will definitely be a problem in the beginning because the problem is that most MCQs come integrated these days. You will not only have questions of pharma and Patho.
There will also be medicine in it. But the biggest advantage of videos is that our videos are integrated. Like if I am teaching Pharma, then first I will explain its Physiology, then I will explain why this disease occurs, what are the problems, what are the targets, then I will tell him that this medicine will affect this target.
So, you will understand it holistically. And you will understand it better in the book. The problem in Pharma books or in the Patho book is that they have not covered Medicine and Surgery.
So, this will also be covered in the videos. Plus, when you solve MCQ, then your concept will develop even better. So, you should do MCQs from now on.
So how do I add it? When you are looking at the textbook, when you are looking at a particular topic which is to be read from the book, there are two ways by which I want you to mark your book. After having watched the main videos, then you are looking at a chapter in the book. The first thing that you have to do is whenever you are looking at the questions which are more frequently asked in your university exams, just put a star in front of those topics.
They are the questions which are highly likely to be repeated with respect to the university exams. So that will take care of the fact that you pass the university exams with very good marks. At the same time, since a lot of you would be having an aim of clearing the subsequent entrance exam, whether we talk about the Indian PG exam, whether we talk about the US MLE, you have to develop that knack of practising the MCQs.
And that will not come in a span of few months or few days. It takes a lot of practises to get into the knack of solving the MCQs. And what can be done now is that after watching the main videos; after reading the chapter from the book, you try to practise those questions from the app.
Or you try to practise the questions let’s say, for example, from our review books. These MCQs are intended to help you develop the concepts in a better way. And as Sir rightly pointed out, they will force you to think about the same topic in a different way.
Then you can perhaps mark those important lines, those important drugs, those pathophysiology points, those histological findings, those special features of the bacteria or the viruses in your book as MCQ points. So eventually, your book is going to be having two different types of colours. One, which is essential for clearing the university exams.
And second, the points which are more important from the perspective of cracking the MCQ information. Now Sir, we also keep on hearing about the fact that there are people who are going to be preparing for the USMLE exam subsequently or there is going to be an expected change in the pattern of the questions which are going to be asked. So how should I deal with that kind of a stress with current reading of the subjects like Path, Pharma and Microbiology? So, I think you don’t need to worry about that.

You don’t need to worry at all. Because the style of our teaching is clinical. You will read in this way that the patient came to you with this problem.
After that, he had these symptoms. We investigated this and this came. So now which Medicine will you give? So, first of all, you have taught in such a way that you understand where to find Pathology, which organ to find, then what will be the likely Pathology, then how to cure it.

How much truth is there in this? Sir, tell me more. No, look, this is to say that you have to study. We teach everyone.
But those who study seriously, definitely get some help. Because your concepts develop. It becomes easy to remember.
So that obviously will help you later on. Rather than answering myself this question, I think it would be better if our students answer it. But you have to work hard.
No matter how well we teach, if you don’t work hard, then nothing will happen in the future. So, sir means that the substrate and the end product is in your hands. We can work like a catalyst.
The point is that yes, part of what I said earlier as a statement is true because we have been blessed by your affection for the last 16 to 17 years and that’s the reason why you see that the editions of the book are running in their 15 plus years, right? But as reiterated, the books have been intended for everybody. But who will benefit? The one who read it carefully, the one who understood it carefully. Same goes for the app as well.
The videos are extremely high-yield videos. They are intended to help you, but they will be beneficial only when you are going to be following a rigorous schedule, when you are going to be diligent enough to understand what is being given in them. It won’t happen that you buy the app and you think that now my rank will come, right? Now to ensure that kind of a discipline you, what we intend to propose is that we are going to be conducting regular tests in the app as well.
These tests are going to be having two functions. One, they will instil a sense of discipline in you because you know after this duration, you are going to be having a test in which you are going to be assessed, right? So as long as there is no pressure on us that we have to perform, we don’t study. That is true for majority of the students.
What will happen second? When you are appearing in that kind of a test, you have scores of people, you have in fact thousands of people who are also appearing in the same test. So, you will get an idea about where do you stand with respect to the people you are likely to compete with in the subsequent times. Right? This is going to be helping in two ways.
Either you are not performing up to the mark, so that will give you some kind of a motivation that yes, I have to do better. If you are performing well, then it will instil a confidence in you that you are on the right track and you have to maintain that. You see as they say that reaching success is easy but maintaining it is difficult.
When will you know that? When you are going to be giving or appearing in that particular test with lots of other people who are going to be doing the same questions in the same set of time. Right? So, anything that we can do especially for the students apart from this? Sir has told you very well that we will conduct regular tests. Rather if you want, we will give a schedule also.
You have to study like this, you have to finish this topic in so many days, you have to finish this topic in so many days. Otherwise, you can make your own schedule also. You already have videos.

So important thing is you should stick to your schedule. You have made a schedule you have to stay focused on it. And if you stay focused, plus we will be mentoring you.
